Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
